Areas of Expertise

Enghin Atalay’s research spans several topics: horizontal and vertical integration; financial, economic, and social networks; regional economics; and the measurement of productivity. Recently, his research has delved into long-run changes in the labor market. Working with colleagues outside of the Bank, he has analyzed how individual jobs changed through the second half of the 20th century, both in the types of tasks that workers perform and in the technologies that workers use.

Enghin has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, he was an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 2014 to 2019.

WP 23-15 – This paper proposes a scalable method to estimate demand curves and markups in a wide variety of consumer-packaged goods markets. Since 2006, markups broadly increased, though there are sizable differences across products in these trends.
