Making Sense of Money and Banking: A 5-Day Course for Teachers

This course, taught by Federal Reserve economists, economic education specialists, and staff from the state centers on economic education, covers money, banking, and the Federal Reserve System. It includes grade-level-specific breakout sessions aimed at providing teachers with lesson plans that can be implemented right away in their classrooms. The course includes sessions on the history of central banking and a visit to the sites of early central banking, which are part of Independence National Historical Park. Emphasis is placed on active- and collaborative-learning teaching methods and curricula for teaching money and banking in the K-12 classroom.

In this one-day professional development program, open to grades 7-12 teachers, Federal Reserve economic education specialists demonstrate curriculum resources for teaching about money, banking and the Federal Reserve. Program participants will be introduced to The Federal Reserve and You, the Reserve Bank’s new multi-part video resource and accompanying lessons. This program emphasizes ways to teach about money, banking, and the Federal Reserve to meet the Common Core State Standards and Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Economics. The program also emphasizes active- and collaborative-learning teaching methods. Participants will each received 6.5 hours of PA Act 48 credit, copies of The Federal Reserve and You, and extensive lesson materials. Continental breakfast and lunch with be provided.

High School Personal Finance: A Two-Day Professional Development Program for Teachers

In this two-day professional development program, open to grades 7-12 teachers, Federal Reserve economic education specialists demonstrate curriculum resources for teaching personal finance in the secondary classroom. Teachers will learn methods for teaching personal decision-making, saving, spending, budgeting, and the wise use of credit. Program participants will be introduced to “Keys to Financial Success,” the Reserve Bank’s 52-lesson high school personal finance curriculum as well as the recently revised Financial Fitness for Life curriculum for grades 9-12. This program emphasizes ways to use the teaching of personal finance to meet the Common Core State Standards and Pennsylvania Academic Content Standards for Economics, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Career Education and Work. The program also emphasizes active- and collaborative-learning teaching methods. Participants will each received 13 hours of PA Act 48 credit and copies of the “Keys to Financial Success” and Financial Fitness for Life, Grades 9-12 materials. Continental breakfast and lunch with be provided.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s economic teachers offer one-day, three-evening, and week-long professional development programs aimed at equipping K-12 teachers to better teach about economics and personal finance in their own classrooms. Teachers receive professional development credit in their respective states. Registration through this website is required.
