Community Organizations

This section provides information about affordable housing, social service, economic development, and community revitalization organizations in the area whose interests, activities, and initiatives improve the housing conditions and employment opportunities of residents. These groups represent potential partners for bankers seeking to more fully address the credit needs of each region's low- and moderate-income people and communities.

AIDS Resource Alliance, Inc.

Mission

AIDS Resource is a nonprofit that provides education programs, prevention, and outreach efforts to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. AIDS Resource also provides assistance for those who are living with HIV/AIDS.

Core Programs

  • Case Management: Provides education and services that connect consumers to medical, psychosocial, and social services based on their needs in order to promote the well being of the individual. Generally involves monthly face-to-face contact, which is necessary to access most support services.
  • Housing Assistance: Provides temporary shelter to eligible individuals, as well as providing rent or mortgage payment to enable individuals to remain in their own dwellings.
  • Direct Emergency Assistance: Provides financial assistance for payment to providers for emergency-based need for food, housing, utilities, medications, and transportation.
  • Nutritional Assistance: Provides nutritional education or counseling to consumers by a registered dietician.
  • Client-Treatment Education: Case managers can provide written, video, and Internet-based treatment resources.
  • Transportation Services: Can reimburse consumers or volunteers for mileage to social service or medical appointments.
  • Food Card: Offers a food program once a month to provide clients with nutritious food.
  • Dental/Medical Care: Provides financial assistance (if available) for payment of dental/medical services.
  • HIV/AIDS Testing: Offers free HIV/AIDS testing.

Campbell Street Family, Youth and Community Association, Inc.

Mission

To make lasting changes in Williamsport by:

  • Providing programs and activities aimed at empowering youth, parents, adults, community organizations, and institutions to regain control of their lives, homes, and communities, and to collectively work to strengthen the community.
  • Nurturing positive feelings in community members about themselves intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially.
  • Offering programs that contribute to self-esteem enhancement and a high level of dignity.

Center for Independent Living of North Central Pennsylvania (CILNCP)

Mission

To advance the rights of persons with disabilities through the elimination of barriers that people with disabilities experience. Community participation is an integral part of the Center for Independent Living of North Central Pennsylvania's activities.

  • Offers training in the following areas: housing, income benefits, social/recreation, self care, mobility/transportation, education, vocation, communication, assistive technology, sexuality, service coordination, advocacy, and attendant care. Offers programs in budgeting and checkbook balancing, cooking and meal preparation, housing assistance, and job readiness.
  • Information and Referral: Maintains information on accessible housing, transportation, employment opportunities, information of persons available to serve as personal care attendants, interpreters for hearing impaired, or readers for visually impaired people, and various other services.
  • Peer Helper Services: Involves helping others to manage, remove, or cope with barriers they encounter. 
  • Statewide Action Team (SWAT): Administers program designed to unite all persons with disabilities by providing effective implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Inc.

Mission

The mission of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Inc. (CCCS of Northeastern PA) is to educate and assist the general public on the intelligent and prudent use of consumer credit; to provide professional budget and housing counseling to families and individuals; and, where appropriate, to arrange a debt management program for financially distressed consumers to liquidate their debts in an orderly and equitable manner.

  • Budget counseling: Teaches individuals sound methods of managing money and credit to avoid financial problems.
  • Debt management program: Establishes orderly repayment plans between an individual and his or her creditors.
  • Credit report review: Obtains and reviews an individual's credit report. Services also include providing recommended actions to repay debt, advising on resolving errors, and teaching the individual to understand the credit reporting process.
  • Housing counseling: Offers several mortgage counseling programs ranging from affordable housing programs for first-time home buyers to mortgage delinquency counseling.
  • Education programs: Offers a variety of money management, credit and first-time home buyer programs to schools, colleges, businesses, lenders, and civic organizations.
  • Employer assistance: Offers this service to businesses that have training programs for their employees. Topics include, but are not limited to, budgeting, using credit wisely, and correcting one's credit report.
  • Pre-bankruptcy counseling: Includes an evaluation of an individual's financial situation, a review of alternatives to bankruptcy, and the development of a personal budget plan.
  • Offers a personal financial management instructional course.

Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity

Mission

A nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Year of Origin

1976

Core Programs

  • Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build future Habitat houses.
  • Habitat ReStore: Provides a valuable source of cash flow through the sales of donated building materials.
  • Women Build: Enables women to discover for themselves that they can build Habitat for Humanity homes.

Hope Enterprises, Inc.

Mission

To help individuals with handicaps and mental disabilities overcome obstacles and enjoy full, happy lives.

  • FOCES (FOCES On Community Employment Success): a social rehabilitation program with an emphasis on pre-employment training.
  • Industrial Program: provides a service to community businesses by meeting short-term and long-term manpower needs.
  • Custodial Program: provides federal, state, and commercial facilities with customized cleaning with a workforce composed of individuals with developmental disabilities and nondisabled workers.

Lycoming-Clinton Counties Commission for Community Action (STEP), Inc.

Mission

Our Towns 2010

Mission

An affiliate organization of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce that seeks to revitalize communities, protect and develop resources, and inspire community confidence and pride through a shared vision.

SEDA-Council of Governments (SEDA-COG)

Mission

SEDA-COG is a regional, multicounty development agency that provides leadership, expertise, and services to communities, businesses, institutions, and residents under the guidance of a public policy board. SEDA-COG seeks to enhance growth opportunities in an environmentally sensitive manner while retaining the region's predominantly rural character. It is both a direct-service provider and a link to other resources that can be applied to a wide range of community and economic needs. SEDA-COG is also an advocate for the interests of its communities at the state and federal levels.
