Cape May County is renowned for the barrier islands that form its eastern edge. These islands are home to a number of oceanfront resort communities, including the Wildwoods, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle City, and Ocean City. The seaside town of Cape May (on the county’s southern tip) — a National Historic Landmark and a popular resort since the mid-1800s — boasts hundreds of elaborately adorned Victorian houses and inns that attract thousands of visitors each year. The famed Wildwoods resort, noted for its distinctive district of "doo-wop" style hotels and motels from the 1950s, contains a two-mile long amusement-crammed boardwalk along a beach whose width reaches over a quarter-mile at some points. Ocean City, founded in 1879 as a Methodist camp meeting, is another popular and family-friendly resort community. During the summer season, tourists in Cape May County regularly outnumber local residents by a wide margin.
